Hot August Nights is Reno and Sparks’ annual week of classic cars and rock ’n’ roll. Its organizer says it is a celebration of classic cars and rock ’n’ roll, with proceeds supporting the community through the Hot August Nights Foundation. The 2026 edition, the 40th, ran July 31 to August 9 and is over. The organizer’s site shows 2027 dates, with one caution explained below.
Not confirmed: The page prints no year beside July 30 – August 8, and no 2027 venues are listed. One banner says 2027 registration is open, and another gave an October opening date, so the two disagree. Check hotaugustnights.net before you plan travel. Read November 2, 2026.

How It Started and What Changed
Sources do not agree on every detail of the early years, so each claim below names its source.
- 1986: Wikipedia says the event was first created by Willie Ray Davison on August 1, 1986, to celebrate 1950s American culture and rock and roll, boost August tourism and raise money for charity, with a first show at the Reno-Sparks Convention Center featuring the Righteous Brothers, Wolfman Jack and Jan & Dean (Wikipedia). Old Cars Weekly instead says the University of Nevada campus is where the event began (January 14, 2025). We have not found the founder named by the organizer or by a news source we read, so treat the founder and first location as not confirmed.
- The start: KOLO says it began as a nostalgic concert that drew about 10,000 people (July 23, 2026).
- 2010: Wikipedia reports a plan for a Long Beach event and an end to the Reno event by 2012. Officials denied Reno would be discontinued, and Long Beach never happened.
- 2020: cancelled for COVID-19 (Wikipedia).
- 2024 (August 2-11): the week opened in Virginia City, added the Nugget Events Center as a new venue and ended with a finale at the Reno-Sparks Convention Center (KOLO, July 29, 2024).
- 2025 (August 1-10): the University of Nevada campus became the main venue after the Grand Sierra Resort began a major renovation. A new “supercruise” ran from the university through downtown Reno and back (Old Cars Weekly).
- 2026 (July 31 – August 9): the 40th year, with Caesars’ downtown Reno resorts as main host and a Main Stage on 4th Street (organizer press page, KOLO).

Past-Year Numbers, With Sources
These are figures the organizer or the press stated at the time. The 500,000 is an organizer estimate, not a counted figure. We found no year-by-year counts for 2019 to 2024 and no post-event totals, so none are shown.
| Figure | Year | Source |
|---|---|---|
| About 6,000 registered participants; 500,000+ attendees estimated; over $100 million economic impact | 2025 (pre-event estimate) | Old Cars Weekly, Jan 14, 2025 |
| “More than 6,000 classic cars” a year, over 500,000 people, over $100 million, attributed to Hot August Nights Inc.; about 350 volunteers and 18,000 hours | 2026 (January report) | KOLO, Jan 28, 2026 |
| “Nearly 6,000” registered vehicles; about 400 cars at the Virginia City kickoff; 400+ volunteers and 20,000+ hours | 2026 (July report) | KOLO, Jul 23, 2026 |
| Foundation, started 2007, has given more than 90 local youth organizations $1.5 million in grants, merchandise and scholarships | As of Jul 2026 | KOLO |
| 2027 registration page showed 3,588 registrations remaining | 2027 | Organizer, read Nov 2, 2026 |
The sources differ a little: 6,000 was the sell-out target in January 2026 and “nearly 6,000” the registered count in July, and the volunteer figures grew between the two reports.
Cars, Cruises and Show-n-Shines
In 2026 the nightly cruises ran in downtown Reno, downtown Sparks, and at the Peppermill and Atlantis. Show-n-Shines were held at downtown Reno and Sparks, the Nugget, Atlantis, Peppermill, J Resort, The Elm Estate and River West Resort, and Bonanza Casino, and the Virginia City kickoff drew about 400 classic cars (KOLO). In 2025 the Show-n-Shines offered more than $80,000 in prizes (Old Cars Weekly).
Wikipedia names George Barris, Ed “Big Daddy” Roth, Tom Daniel and the cast of American Graffiti among notable participants, and says the week ends with a Sunday-morning parade of registered cars down Virginia Street (secondary source). We have not confirmed these on the organizer’s site.
Other Classic-Car Things in The Area
- Street Heat: a four-day classic car and concert festival at the Grand Sierra Resort, August 5-8, 2026. CDC Gaming reported that it is not affiliated with Hot August Nights. We have not read its 2027 plans.
- National Automobile Museum: opened November 5, 1989 in downtown Reno, built around the collection of William F. Harrah. Wikipedia says more than 200 cars are on display in four galleries. We have not read the museum’s own site, so check hours and prices there.
