Winter Driving and Chain Controls
- ChainsStop and install chains when signs say chains are required; the California Highway Patrol can cite you. It is about a mile from the “Chains Required” sign to the checkpoint. The speed limit with chains is 25 or 30 mph.
- HowPull fully off the road to the right; chains go on the drive wheels; remove them past the “End of Chain Control” sign. Chain installers are independent, not Caltrans; get a receipt and badge number.
- Before you goCheck brakes, wipers, heater, tires and antifreeze. Carry chains, a flashlight, scraper, shovel, sand, water, food and blankets. Keep the tank full, stay four car lengths behind plows, and stay with your vehicle if stalled.
- NevadaThe Nevada Roads map flags segments where chains or snow tires are required, including four-wheel-drive rules. NDOT’s winter driving and chain pages did not load for us.

What We Could Not Confirm
These items were not read on an official page when we checked, so we do not state them as fact. Who can confirm each one is named.
- R-1, R-2 and R-3 chain-control levels, and NDOT chain rules: not defined on a page we read.
- USGS river gauges, Nevada Division of Forestry and Northern Nevada Public Health smoke pages: did not load for us, so they are not linked.
- Truckee Meadows Fire & Rescue burn status: its page contradicts itself.
