Riding The V&T Today

The Virginia & Truckee Railroad says passenger service began again on July 2, 1976, as America celebrated its Bicentennial, and 2026 is the 50th anniversary. Its Comstock Route is a narrated 35-minute round trip by diesel train between Virginia City and Gold Hill; the next season starts Memorial Day weekend. A two-person electric railbike tour of the Carson River Canyon, run by partner RailZephyr, is planned for spring 2027 (about an hour).

The Original Railroad

The first V&T hauled Comstock ore and supplies. The Virginia City Tourism Commission says it carried bullion from Virginia City down to Carson City. Wikipedia (secondary) gives ground broken February 18, 1869, the line opened January 29, 1870, the spike for the Reno extension driven August 24, 1872, a branch to Minden in 1906, the Virginia City branch torn up in 1938 and the railroad abandoned in 1950. We have not read a museum page confirming those dates. The Nevada State Railroad Museum in Carson City keeps V&T locomotive No. 25.

What We Could Not Confirm

These items were not read on an official page when we checked, so we do not state them as fact. Who can confirm each one is named.

  • Daily train times and fares (the railroad’s own schedule pages).
  • Dates of the original railroad: Wikipedia is the only source we read (Nevada State Railroad Museum can confirm).
  • Whether the railroad runs in winter outside the holiday trains.
