The Story
The popular line is “Samuel Clemens became Mark Twain in Virginia City.” The Mark Twain House says Clemens began writing for the Territorial Enterprise, “a Virginia City, Nevada newspaper where he used, for the first time, his pen name, Mark Twain” [4].
What Is Actually True
- The Mark Twain Project (University of California, Berkeley) says that in February 1863, while Clemens was on a week’s leave in Carson City, he sent three long comic letters to the Enterprise; they were the first signed “Mark Twain” [2].
- The first of them, “Letter from Carson City,” was printed in the Enterprise “almost certainly on 3 February 1863”; the project’s only known copy is a clipping in Scrapbook 4, and its headnote says it is “likely” this was the first piece he signed “Mark Twain” [1]. So the name was written in Carson City and printed in Virginia City.
- Another Mark Twain Project note cannot print a firm date for a different item, saying editors conjecture it appeared on March 4, 1863, and shows a May 1863 Enterprise farewell, almost certainly by editor Joseph Goodman, calling “Mark Twain” the “Monarch of Mining Items” [3].
- Wikipedia (secondary) dates the first signed letter to Feb. 3, 1863 and quotes the sign-off “yours dreamily, MARK TWAIN” [5].
Still Unconfirmed
Where the name came from (this card does not repeat the riverboat or Captain Isaiah Sellers claims because no primary page was read); whether any earlier piece carries the signature.
