Closed, Renamed and Moved Places Around Reno and Tahoe

Print / Save As PDF

Places around Reno and Tahoe that are closed, under construction, closed for the season or renamed, each read on the operator’s or agency’s own page and dated. It starts with the Hobart Reservoir dam project in Spooner Lake & Backcountry State Park and the Donner Lake boat launch, whose page contradicts itself. Ski-area name history lives on Closed and Renamed Ski Areas.

Donner Lake Public Boat Launch, Truckee
Donner Lake
Page says CLOSED; text says open off-season The Truckee-Donner Recreation and Park District page is titled “(CLOSED)” but its text says the ramp is unstaffed from October to April and “not closed to the public,” with self-registration for launching and a warning that lake levels may be extremely low. The page gives no reopening date. Treat the status as not confirmed and call the district before you tow a boat. Truckee-Donner Recreation and Park District: Donner Lake Public Boat Launch

Moved

No move has been confirmed on an official page yet, so this list is empty rather than guessed. Tell us through the corrections page if you know of one.

What We Could Not Confirm

These items were not read on an official page when we checked, so we do not state them as fact. Who can confirm each one is named.

  • Whether the Donner Lake Public Boat Launch is open or closed: its page says both. The district office, 530-582-7720, can confirm. On November 2 we also read the page as “closed for construction”; that wording is not on the page today.
  • The Tahoe Rim Trail closure from Barker Pass to Twin Peaks because of the Talbot Fire, which our hiking guide noted on November 2: it was not listed on the association’s page when we read it on November 3. Check the association before you hike there.
  • Reopening dates for Homewood, D. L. Bliss State Park and Donner Lake Watersports beyond what each page says. Each operator can confirm.
  • The year Sierra Ski Ranch became Sierra-at-Tahoe, and every other ski-area name change: those are on the ski areas page and mostly rest on Wikipedia, which is secondary.

Frequently Asked Questions

How often is this page checked?

Each row carries the date we read its source. Seasonal rows change as operators reopen, so a row can be out of date before we recheck it; the official page wins.

Does a seasonal closure mean the place is gone?

No. A row marked closed for the season is expected to reopen; the page quotes what the operator says and we do not add dates they did not post.
