How to Pick
Choose the north for the most skiing within about an hour of Truckee and quieter beach towns; choose the south for Heavenly and the Forest Service sites near Fallen Leaf Lake. Both are on the same lake, so a day trip to the other is possible. Emerald Bay sits between them on the west shore.
For the Truckee choice see Truckee or South Lake Tahoe.
