Hot August Nights History: 1986 To Today

Print / Save As PDF

Hot August Nights started on August 1, 1986 as a nostalgia party for classic cars and 1950s and 60s music, and the 40th anniversary ran July 31 to August 9, 2026.[1] Every number on this page is dated and tied to the page it was read on.

Checked November 3, 2026. For this year’s schedule, see the Hot August Nights guide. Past figures never stand in for the coming edition.

  • 1986first event, August 1 (organizer)
  • 28,000people over three days in 1986 (Lake Tahoe News)
  • 40thanniversary in 2026
  • 2007year the charity foundation began (organizer)

How It Started

The organizer’s history page says the first event was on August 1, 1986, and that it was named for the hot weather and the month. It was meant to fill a gap in Reno’s August tourism and to raise money for local charities.[1] In that first year it was more a nostalgia event than a car event, and the car parade on Virginia Street was the highlight.[1] Lake Tahoe News reported in 2011 that about 28,000 people came over the three days in 1986, nearly three times the 3,000 organizers expected.[3]

Not confirmed Who founded it. The organizer pages we read name no founder. Lake Tahoe News calls Willie Davison “the event co-founder,” and Wikipedia (a secondary source) says Willie Ray Davison created it.[3][11] We do not state a founder as fact. The organizer’s 2025 release says the event “started in 1986 at the University of Nevada campus,” while its history page and Lake Tahoe News describe the first night at the Reno-Sparks Convention Center, so we cannot confirm the first venue either.[6][1]

Past Years

Dates are as the organizer or news outlet published them. A blank means we did not read a figure for that year, so we left it out.

Year Dates What was reported Source
1986 August 1 (first night) About 28,000 people over three days; about 10,000 on the first night [1][3]
2011 Dates not read Called the 25th year of the event [3]
2020 Postponed The organizer’s 2021 release refers to “the 2020 postponement”; Wikipedia says cancelled [4][11]
2021 Virginia City July 30-31; Reno-Sparks August 3-8 Reno-Sparks car cap of 6,000 registered; Virginia City sold out at 400 cars [4]
2024 August 2-11 5,500 registered participants; the organizer says more than 500,000 spectators; nightly entertainment moved to Sparks [5]
2025 August 1-10 About 6,000 registered participants; main venue moved to the University of Nevada campus during a resort renovation (organizer) [6]
2026 July 31 to August 9 40th anniversary; nearly 6,000 registered vehicles expected, all 1979 or older; more than 400 volunteers giving over 20,000 hours; main stage moved to 4th Street in downtown Reno [7][8][9]

Edition numbers do not step by one in the organizer’s own releases (34th in 2021, 37th in 2024, 39th in 2025, 40th in 2026), so we say only “started in 1986, 40th anniversary in 2026.” We read no attendance or car-entry figure for 1987 to 2020, 2022 or 2023.

The Charity Foundation

The Hot August Nights Foundation was established in 2007 as the charitable arm for children in need or at risk.[1] The organizer’s 2026 release says the foundation has given $1.5 million to more than 90 local youth organizations since 2007.[7]

What The Organizer Says About 2027

The organizer’s registration page lists the 2027 Reno-Sparks event as July 30 to August 8, 2027 and says Virginia City runs July 30-31, 2027.[10] The organizer’s home page shows the same range with no year printed. Not yet announced The full 2027 schedule; we check weekly.
