California Chain Controls

Level What Caltrans says
R-1 Chains required on most vehicles. Passenger vehicles and light trucks under 6,000 lb gross weight are exempt if they have snow tires on at least two drive wheels, but must carry chains.
R-2 Chains or traction devices required on all vehicles except those with snow-tread tires on all four wheels. 4WD/AWD vehicles are exempt from the tire requirement but must carry traction devices.
R-3 Chains or traction devices required on all vehicles, no exemptions.

Caltrans defines only three levels and says some local areas use variations; signs along the road show the requirement. Snow-tread tires are marked MS, M/S, M+S or MUD AND SNOW.

Live Road Information

California: Caltrans QuickMap. Nevada: nvroads.com, the Nevada 511 site run by NDOT, with a map of traffic events, cameras and weather. Its legend includes “Chains or Snow Tires Required”, “Chains Required, All Vehicles except 4-wheel drive with Snow tires”, “Adverse Driving Conditions” and “Road Closed”. It shows snowplow data typically between October 15 and May 1.
