Closest to Reno
Mt. Rose is the nearest major resort by our estimate. Its page lists a 1,800-foot vertical drop, a 9,700-foot summit and an 8,260-foot base, and a strict no-dogs policy. Diamond Peak above Incline Village is next at about 45 to 55 minutes.
On Donner Summit and Around Truckee
Seven ski and snow areas sit around Truckee and Donner Pass: Northstar, Sugar Bowl, Tahoe Donner, Donner Ski Ranch, Royal Gorge, Boreal and Soda Springs. Our Truckee page notes night skiing, Woodward Tahoe and Tube Town at Boreal and Soda Springs.
Cross-Country, Snowshoes and Sledding
Royal Gorge and Tahoe Donner are the Nordic areas. Spooner Lake has winter trails groomed free of charge by the nonprofit Nevada Nordic, with a $10 day-use fee per Nevada vehicle ($15 for others). Galena Creek lists cross-country skiing, snowshoeing and sledding. Donner Memorial State Park has more than 8 miles of hiking and over-the-snow trails.
Before You Drive Up
Mountain roads change fast in winter. Read winter driving to Tahoe before you leave, and see closed and renamed ski areas if an old name confuses you.
